This guide is part of the DJ software guide.

Your controller came with Serato DJ Lite. Now every tutorial on YouTube seems to be using buttons you do not have.

That is the moment most beginners start wondering whether to pay for Serato DJ Pro. The answer is not automatic. Lite is a genuinely good place to learn, and plenty of DJs upgrade too early. Others put it off for a year and miss the one feature — recording — that would have made them improve faster. Here is a clear breakdown of what each version does, what Pro costs in 2026, and how to decide.

Serato DJ Lite is free and covers the basics: two decks, four hot cues, simple FX and stems. Serato DJ Pro costs $11.99 a month or $299 outright and adds mix recording, eight hot cues, advanced FX, saved loops, MIDI mapping and CDJ support. Many mid-range controllers unlock Pro for free.

The Short Version

Serato DJ Lite is the free, simplified edition that ships with entry-level controllers such as the Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 and DDJ-REV1. Serato DJ Pro is the full program used in clubs worldwide. Both share the same library and analysis, so anything you prepare in Lite carries straight over when you upgrade.

Before paying anything, check whether your hardware already unlocks Pro. Many mid-range and professional controllers include a Pro licence that activates automatically when you plug them in. Serato’s upgrade guide explains how licences and hardware unlocks work.

When Upgrading Makes Sense

  • You want to record your mixes. This is the biggest reason. Listening back to your own sets is the fastest way to improve, and Lite cannot do it. See how to record a DJ mix.
  • You run out of hot cues. Four is enough to learn; eight is what most performance DJs use. More in what hot cues are.
  • You are getting gigs on club gear. Pro lets you control Serato from CDJs, and Suite adds DVS for turntables and club mixers.
  • You want saved loops and Beat Jump for longer, more creative transitions.

When Lite Is Enough

  • You are still learning to beatmatch. Extra buttons do not help; practice does. Start with the beginner’s guide to beatmatching.
  • You play two-deck sets at home for fun and have no plans to record.
  • You are not sure Serato is your long-term software. Try the Pro trial first, or compare options in rekordbox vs Serato.

A sensible path for most beginners: learn on Lite for a few months, take the free Pro trial when you start recording, then choose a monthly plan or a one-off licence depending on how long you expect to stay with Serato. Our full Serato DJ Pro review covers the software in depth.

A Note From NaJade

Most of my students in Bangkok start on a DDJ-FLX4 with Serato DJ Lite, and I tell them the same thing every time: don’t pay for Pro until you have a reason. For most people, that reason turns up when they want to record their first proper mix. Hearing yourself back is humbling and incredibly useful — you notice the clashing vocals and rushed transitions you never heard while playing. So if you are spending more than a couple of hours a week on the decks, the subscription is probably worth a month or two. If not, keep practising on Lite. The software was never what was holding you back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Serato DJ Lite free?
Yes. Serato DJ Lite is free to download and use with supported entry-level controllers, and it also has a Practice Mode that works on a laptop with no hardware. It covers two-deck mixing, four hot cues per track, basic effects, stems and library management, which is plenty for learning the fundamentals.
How much does Serato DJ Pro cost?
In 2026, Serato DJ Pro costs $11.99 a month on subscription or $299 as a one-time licence. Serato DJ Suite, which adds DVS, Video, advanced FX and other expansions, costs $14.99 a month or $499 outright. Some controllers include a Pro licence for free, so check your hardware first.
What does Serato DJ Pro have that Lite doesn’t?
Pro adds built-in mix recording, eight hot cues instead of four, up to four decks, the full Pro FX set and Stems FX, saved loops, Beat Jump, Slicer, quantize, Smart Sync, MIDI mapping and support for CDJs in HID mode. Lite keeps the core mixing tools but leaves out these performance and recording features.
Can you record a mix in Serato DJ Lite?
No, Serato DJ Lite has no built-in recording. To record while using Lite, you need to capture the output another way, for example with free software such as Audacity or OBS, or a mixer or recorder with its own recording output. Serato DJ Pro records your mix directly from inside the software.
Does my controller unlock Serato DJ Pro?
Many mid-range and professional controllers come with a Serato DJ Pro unlock, so Pro activates automatically when you connect them. Entry-level models such as the DDJ-FLX4 and DDJ-REV1 usually work with Lite and need a paid upgrade for Pro. Check your controller’s product page or Serato’s hardware list to confirm.
Should I buy Serato DJ Pro or subscribe?
If you are unsure how long you will use Serato, subscribe monthly — you can cancel anytime. If you know you will DJ with it for more than about two years, the one-off $299 licence works out cheaper. Either way, take the free trial first to make sure the features you want actually matter to you.
