The fastest way from Bangkok to Koh Samui is a direct Bangkok Airways flight from Suvarnabhumi: about 1 hour 5 minutes, with one-way fares typically around ฿2,800–6,800. The best-value option is a budget flight from Don Mueang to Surat Thani plus a bus-and-ferry combo, about 5–7 hours door to door. The cheapest is the overnight train or bus plus ferry, which takes 12–17 hours.
Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, about 35 km off the coast of Surat Thani province. Because it’s an island, every route except the direct flight ends with a boat. I’ve done the trip all three ways — the quick flight for a wedding gig, the Surat Thani combo with a controller in my carry-on, and the night train for fun. Here’s what each one is really like.
Direct flight: about 1 hour, roughly ฿2,800–6,800, from Suvarnabhumi. Fly to Surat Thani plus bus and ferry: 5–7 hours, about ฿1,500–3,000 all in. Night train plus ferry: 15–17 hours, about ฿950–2,000. Book the ferry leg as a joint ticket so the connections are handled for you.
Your Options at a Glance
| Route | Total time | Typical cost (one way) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight to Samui | ~1h 5m in the air | ฿2,800–6,800 | Short trips, comfort, connecting flights |
| Fly to Surat Thani + bus + ferry | 5–7 hours | ฿1,500–3,000 | Best balance of time and money |
| Night train + bus + ferry | 15–17 hours | ฿950–2,000 | Slow travel, saving a hotel night |
| Bus + ferry joint ticket | 12–16 hours | ฿620–1,750 | Tightest budgets |
Fares rise around New Year, Chinese New Year and Songkran. Samui’s weather differs from the Andaman coast: its main rainy spell is usually around October to December, when ferry crossings can be rougher.
Option 1: The Direct Flight
Samui Airport was built by Bangkok Airways, which still runs it and operates the flights from Bangkok — around 20 a day from Suvarnabhumi and a few from Don Mueang. The flight takes about 1 hour 5–15 minutes, and the fare normally includes checked baggage.
- Why it costs more: limited competition and airport fees. Book early for the lower end of the range.
- The airport itself is small, open-air and close to Chaweng and Bophut, so transfers are short.
- Getting to Suvarnabhumi: see Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city — the same routes work in reverse.
Option 2: Fly to Surat Thani, Then Ferry
Low-cost airlines including Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air fly from Don Mueang to Surat Thani (URT) in about 1 hour 15 minutes, with fares commonly around ฿1,000–2,000. In the arrivals hall, counters sell combo tickets that bundle a bus to the Donsak pier and a ferry to Samui.
| Ferry operator | Arrives at | Crossing time |
|---|---|---|
| Seatran | Nathon | ~1h 30m |
| Raja Ferry (car ferry) | Lipa Noi | ~1h 30m |
| Lomprayah (catamaran) | Nathon | ~45 min |
Airport combo tickets typically cost from a few hundred baht up to about ฿950 depending on the operator. Once you add the flight, this route usually lands at roughly half the price of the direct flight. Check the Don Mueang guide for getting to the airport.
Option 3: Night Train or Bus, Then Ferry
- Train: around ten trains a day run from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Surat Thani’s Phun Phin station. Evening sleepers arrive around dawn, connecting with morning buses and ferries. A second-class air-con berth is the sweet spot. Book through the State Railway of Thailand or buy a joint train-bus-ferry ticket.
- Government bus: evening departures from the Southern Bus Terminal and Mo Chit connect with ferries the next morning — the cheapest option overall.
- Private bus-and-boat tickets: Lomprayah and others run combined coach and catamaran services from the Khao San area, taking roughly 11–14 hours.
Like any long overnight trip, keep valuables on you and be wary of very cheap street-sold “VIP” tickets — see Bangkok scams to avoid. If you enjoy the sleeper, it’s the same experience as Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
Tips for the Trip
- Buy joint tickets for any route with a ferry. If a bus is late, the operator holds or rebooks your boat.
- Check the ferry pier on your ticket. Nathon, Lipa Noi and Bangrak are in different parts of the island.
- Pack light for boats. Big suitcases are awkward on catamarans and piers.
- Allow buffer time before an onward international flight; weather can delay ferries.
- Carry motion-sickness tablets if you’re sensitive — the Gulf can be choppy in the rainy season.
A Note From NaJade
My favourite way to Samui isn’t the fastest. It’s the Surat Thani combo: a cheap morning flight, a bus through the countryside, and then forty-five minutes on the catamaran watching the island get bigger. By the time you step onto the pier, you’ve already switched into island mode. When I’m flying in for a gig with a tight schedule, I take the direct flight and don’t think twice. But if you have the time, the ground and sea route shows you a side of southern Thailand the plane flies right over. Either way, book the boat with the bus — that’s the one tip that saves people the most stress.
