If progressive house builds a journey, electro house kicks the door in.

Electro house was the sound of a whole era of clubbing — the late 2000s and early 2010s, when distorted basslines, sidechained synths and massive drops took over festivals and radio. It’s louder and grittier than most house music, and its DNA runs through big room, complextro and a lot of today’s festival EDM. If you DJ peak-time sets, you’ll meet it whether you call it by name or not.

Electro house is a subgenre of house music, usually 125–135 BPM, defined by heavy, buzzing synth basslines — often distorted sawtooth waves — four-on-the-floor kicks and tracks built around a big drop. It rose in the mid-2000s with artists like Benny Benassi, Fedde Le Grand, Justice and deadmau5, and later fed into big room and complextro.

What Electro House Sounds Like

Put simply, electro house is house music with its teeth showing. The groove is the same four-on-the-floor kick you’d hear in any club, but the emphasis moves from soulful chords and vocals to aggressive, synth-heavy basslines.

ElementIn electro house
TempoUsually 125–135 BPM, most often around 128
BassBuzzing, distorted sawtooth or square-wave bass, often heavily sidechained
DrumsPunchy four-on-the-floor kick, sharp claps, driving hats
StructureBuild, breakdown, drop — tracks are arranged around the climax
MelodyShort, hooky synth riffs rather than long progressions
MoodEnergetic, loud, a bit cheeky

Compared with progressive house, which builds slowly and emotionally over long arrangements, electro house gets to the point. Compared with tech house, it’s brighter and more maximal.

A Short History

The roots go back to the late 1990s, when producers began blending house with the robotic, synth-led sound of 1980s electro. Tracks like Mr. Oizo’s “Flat Beat” (1999) are often named as early signposts. Then came Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” (2002), whose grinding, filtered bass became a blueprint for the decade.

By the mid-2000s the sound was everywhere. In 2006, Fedde Le Grand’s “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit” reached number one in the UK. In France, Daft Punk’s influence was carried forward by Justice and labels like Ed Banger, while artists such as Digitalism, Erol Alkan and The Bloody Beetroots pushed a rawer, rock-influenced version. deadmau5, Steve Aoki and Dada Life helped take it into festival culture. The Subgenres It Spawned

StyleWhenWhat changed
Fidget houseMid-2000sChopped vocals, pitch-bent bass, glitchy grooves
Dutch houseLate 2000sLatin-style percussion, squeaky high leads, less bass weight
ComplextroAround 2010Rapid-fire, glitchy basslines switching between sounds — Porter Robinson coined the name
Big roomEarly 2010sSimpler drops, huge kicks, festival-scale build-ups

If you’ve heard big room on a main stage, you’ve heard electro house’s most commercial descendant — see what big room house is. Complextro, meanwhile, pointed toward the heavier bass music of the early 2010s, and you can hear the overlap with dubstep in that period.

How to DJ Electro House

  • Mix on the phrase. Tracks are built in clear 8- and 16-bar blocks leading to a drop. Line your transitions up so drops land together or one hands over to the next. See counting bars and phrases.
  • Watch the low end. Two distorted basslines at once turn to mud. Swap the bass with the EQ rather than blending both.
  • Use key. Hooky synth riffs clash loudly. Harmonic mixing helps a lot here.
  • Pace your energy. Electro house is all peaks. Use it in short bursts, and let calmer tracks breathe around it.

You can browse current releases tagged as the genre on Beatport’s electro house chart. Expect a mix of classic-sounding tracks and modern festival crossovers. For how it fits alongside everything else, the house music subgenres guide maps out the family tree.

A Note From NaJade

I came up on progressive house, so electro house was the loud cousin at the party for me — the one I avoided, then secretly loved. These days I drop the odd electro house track in a peak-time set in Bangkok when a room needs a jolt, usually in the last hour. A little goes a long way. Play three in a row and the crowd gets tired; play one at the right moment and the whole floor lifts. That’s the lesson the genre taught me: energy is something you spend, not something you hold. Learn when to spend it, and electro house becomes one of the most useful tools in your bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electro house music?
Electro house is a subgenre of house music known for heavy, buzzing synth basslines, punchy four-on-the-floor drums and tracks arranged around a big drop. It usually runs at 125–135 BPM. It rose to prominence in the mid-2000s as a louder, more aggressive alternative to the house styles popular at the time.
What BPM is electro house?
Electro house usually sits between 125 and 135 BPM, with many tracks around 128. That puts it close to progressive house and big room, which makes it easy to mix with both. Some faster or slower tracks exist, but most DJs will find electro house in the same tempo range as mainstream festival EDM.
Who are famous electro house artists?
Key names include Benny Benassi, Fedde Le Grand, Justice, Digitalism, deadmau5, Steve Aoki, The Bloody Beetroots and Dada Life. Later artists such as Porter Robinson, Zedd, Knife Party and Feed Me pushed the sound into complextro. Afrojack and Hardwell came through the Dutch house and big room branch.
What is the difference between electro house and big room?
Big room grew out of electro house in the early 2010s. Electro house is driven by gritty, buzzing basslines and busy synth riffs. Big room strips that back to huge kicks, long build-ups and simple, chant-like drops designed for festival main stages. Big room is generally more minimal and more commercial.
Is electro house the same as electro?
No. Electro is an older style from the early 1980s, built on drum-machine breakbeats, robotic vocals and funk influences rather than a straight house kick. Electro house borrowed electro’s synth sounds and attitude but kept house music’s four-on-the-floor rhythm. The names are similar, but they are different genres.
Is electro house still popular?
It is less dominant than in its 2007–2013 peak, but it never really disappeared. Its sound lives on in big room, festival EDM and newer bass-house producers, and there’s a steady revival among artists who grew up on it. Peak-time DJs still use electro house tracks for short bursts of high energy.
