No. Vapes, e-cigarettes, e-liquids and heat-not-burn devices are illegal to bring into, sell or possess in Thailand, and there are no exceptions for tourists or personal use. Devices are confiscated, fines of 5,000–30,000 baht are common, and import or possession can in theory carry prison sentences. The safest choice is to leave your vape at home.
This is one of the most common questions I get from friends flying into Bangkok, usually followed by “but I saw people vaping on Sukhumvit”. You probably did. That doesn’t make it legal, and it’s one of the easiest ways for a tourist to turn a great trip into an expensive afternoon with the police. Here’s what the law actually says, in plain English.
Vaping is illegal in Thailand for everyone, including tourists. Importing a vape — even one in your bag — can be treated as smuggling, and possession, sale and public use are all offences. Expect confiscation and a fine at minimum. Bring nicotine gum or patches instead, and only smoke ordinary cigarettes in designated areas.
What Thai Law Says About Vapes
Thailand banned the import of e-cigarettes in 2014 and their sale soon after, and the rules are enforced through customs and consumer protection laws rather than one single “vape law”. The UK government’s Thailand travel advice puts it bluntly: it is illegal to possess or use any vape, e-cigarette, pod, e-liquid or heat-not-burn device, and there are no exceptions for tourists or personal use.
| Offence | Maximum penalty under the law |
|---|---|
| Importing a vape (including in luggage) | Up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to 5x the goods’ value |
| Possessing smuggled vapes | Up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of up to 4x the goods’ value |
| Selling e-cigarettes | Up to 3 years in prison and/or heavy fines |
| Vaping in a public non-smoking area | Fine of up to 5,000 baht |
These are legal ceilings, not what usually happens to a tourist. In practice, the most common outcome is confiscation and a fine, often in the 5,000–30,000 baht range. But you have no control over how your case is handled, and some visitors have been detained while it’s sorted out.
What Happens at the Airport
- Customs can check any bag at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket — checked luggage, carry-on or on your person.
- There is no way to declare a vape legally. Unlike alcohol or cigarettes, there’s no allowance and no permit.
- Taking it apart doesn’t help. Pods, coils and e-liquid are all covered.
- Airline rules still apply when leaving. Most airlines require vapes in carry-on only, which is irrelevant if you can’t bring one in to start with.
If you’re flying in, sort out your arrival paperwork in advance with our Thailand Digital Arrival Card guide, and read how to get from Suvarnabhumi to the city for the next step.
“But Everyone Vapes in Bangkok”
You will see vape shops, market stalls selling disposables and people vaping outside bars. That’s the confusing part. All of it is illegal, and Thai authorities run regular crackdowns — in early 2025 alone, police reported hundreds of arrests and hundreds of thousands of devices seized in a single week-long operation.
- Buying locally doesn’t make it legal. A vape bought in Bangkok is still an illegal product.
- Police checks happen in nightlife areas. Tourist hotspots are exactly where enforcement focuses.
- Beware anyone offering to “settle it”. Paying a bribe is itself a crime. Ask for an official process and contact your embassy if you’re detained. See Bangkok scams to avoid and is Bangkok safe.
Heated Tobacco, Smoking and Alternatives
| Product | Legal in Thailand? |
|---|---|
| E-cigarettes, pods, disposables | No |
| Heat-not-burn (IQOS, glo) | No — treated like e-cigarettes |
| Ordinary cigarettes | Yes, with limits: only in designated smoking areas; duty-free allowance applies |
| Nicotine gum and patches | Yes — sold in pharmacies |
Smoking is banned in most indoor public places, including bars, clubs and restaurants, as well as many beaches, parks and transport hubs. Look for designated smoking areas — many rooftop bars and clubs have one. The US State Department’s Thailand page is another good place to check current local laws before you travel.
A Note From NaJade
I play in bars and clubs where you’ll sometimes see a vape cloud on the dancefloor, and I’ve heard enough stories from people whose night ended with a police check instead of a last song. It’s simply not worth it. Thailand is a welcoming country that asks visitors to respect a few rules, and this is one it takes seriously. If you need nicotine, bring patches or gum, use the smoking areas, and spend the money you’d have lost on a fine on a great dinner instead.
