The cheapest way from Don Mueang Airport to Bangkok is the SRT Red Line train: about 33 baht and 15–20 minutes to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, where you change to the MRT Blue Line. A metered taxi to Sukhumvit costs roughly 300–425 baht including the 50-baht airport surcharge and tolls, and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. The A1–A4 airport buses cost 30–50 baht.
Don Mueang is Bangkok’s older airport, and it’s where most budget flights land — AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air. I use it constantly for gigs in Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. Unlike Suvarnabhumi, it has no direct express train into the centre, so first-timers often get confused. The options are simple once you see them side by side.
Train: SRT Red Line, about 33 baht and 15–20 minutes to Krung Thep Aphiwat, then the MRT. Bus: A1–A4, 30–50 baht, slow in traffic. Taxi: meter plus a 50-baht surcharge and tolls, roughly 300–425 baht to Sukhumvit. Grab: a fixed price before you ride, from the official pickup points.

| A3 / A4 bus | 50 baht | 45 min to 2 hours | Pratunam, Lumphini, Khao San Road |

The SRT Red Line Train
The Dark Red Line runs from Don Mueang station to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (the old Bang Sue Grand Station), Bangkok’s main rail hub. From there, the MRT Blue Line takes you to Chatuchak for BTS Mo Chit, to Sukhumvit for BTS Asok, or on towards Silom and Chinatown.
- Follow the signs to the train. Walk through Terminal 1 towards Terminal 2, go up to the second floor and take the covered skywalk with travelators. Allow about 15 minutes from international arrivals.
- Buy a ticket or tap a card. A single ticket to Krung Thep Aphiwat is about 33 baht. Until at least 30 November 2026, tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard caps Red Line fares at 40 baht a day.
- Ride 15–20 minutes towards Krung Thep Aphiwat. Trains run roughly every 10 minutes at rush hour and every 15 minutes otherwise, from about 5am to midnight.
- Change to the MRT Blue Line inside the same complex and continue to your area.
Fares are distance-based, and the promotional caps are reviewed every year, so check the official SRT Red Line fares and timetable before you travel. The transfer is the weak point: with a big suitcase, the walk and the change to the MRT get tiring.
Taxi and Grab From Don Mueang
Public taxis queue on the arrivals level at Terminal 1, Gate 8 and next to Terminal 2, Gate 15, 24 hours a day. You take a ticket, and the driver uses the meter. On top of the meter you pay:
- A 50-baht airport surcharge, fixed by the airport.
- Expressway tolls, roughly 25–75 baht, paid by the passenger at the booths.
- Luggage fees of around 20 baht per bag for larger loads, and up to 100 baht for oversized items like a bike or a big flight case.
To Sukhumvit, that usually adds up to about 300–425 baht all in. The airport publishes the official taxi-meter rules for Don Mueang. Grab is allowed too, from designated pickup points on Level 1 of both terminals; the price is fixed before you get in, but it can rise noticeably in rain or at peak hours. Ignore anyone in the hall offering a “taxi” — more on that in Bangkok scams to avoid.
The A1–A4 Airport Buses
| Bus | Route | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | BTS Mo Chit / Chatuchak and Mo Chit bus terminal | 30 baht |
| A2 | Victory Monument | 30 baht |
| A3 | Pratunam to Lumphini Park | 50 baht |
| A4 | Khao San Road to Sanam Luang | 50 baht |
Buses run roughly from early morning until late evening, every 12–30 minutes. The A1 is the most useful: one short ride to the BTS at Mo Chit, a stop from Chatuchak Weekend Market — see the best markets in Bangkok. Boarding points have moved in recent years, so follow the airport signs; the Thai government guide to the airport buses lists the routes.
Which Should You Choose?
- Backpack, daytime, staying near the MRT: Red Line train.
- Staying on Khao San Road: the A4 bus, or a taxi if it’s late.
- Big luggage, kids or a group of three or four: taxi or Grab, split between you.
- Landing after 11pm: taxi or Grab — the trains and buses wind down.
- Rush hour on a weekday: the train, because the expressways crawl.

A Note From NaJade
Most of my domestic gig flights go through Don Mueang, usually with a laptop bag, headphones and a backup USB in every pocket. In the daytime I take the Red Line almost every time — it’s cheap, the air-con is cold, and I don’t have to watch the meter in traffic. After a late show I just get a taxi from the official queue and sleep in the back. The one mistake I see constantly is people walking out of arrivals and accepting the first ride offered. Walk past them, follow the signs, and you’ll pay a fair price every time. Bangkok is easy once you’re out of the airport.
